Safeguarding Audits

Thorough, supportive audits to strengthen safeguarding culture.

Audits

Does our setting need an audit?

External safeguarding audits offer a vital layer of accountability and assurance for school leaders and governors. By engaging independent professionals, schools benefit from a fresh, impartial perspective on their safeguarding systems, helping to identify strengths, areas for development, and any potential risks that may have been overlooked internally. These audits ensure the school remains compliant with statutory guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education and reflect best practice in protecting pupils.

They also demonstrate a strong commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and the well-being of children. For governing bodies, an external audit provides evidence that safeguarding is being robustly monitored and managed, and offers confidence that policies are not only in place, but effectively implemented across the school community.

What can I expect from an audit?

An external safeguarding audit conducted by Education Safeguarding is a comprehensive, one-day review designed to assess all aspects of a school’s safeguarding compliance and culture. Led by experienced safeguarding professionals, the audit examines key areas including:

  • Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Safer recruitment practices
  • Staff training and understanding
  • Record-keeping and case management
  • Pupil voice and school culture
  • Governance and leadership oversight

Throughout the day, auditors will engage with staff, review documentation, and evaluate the school’s safeguarding practices against statutory requirements and best-practice benchmarks.

Within 10 working days, the school will receive a detailed written report outlining:

  • Areas of strong, effective practice
  • Any weaknesses or gaps in compliance
  • Clear, actionable recommendations for improvement
  • An offer of ongoing support to address and strengthen identified areas

This audit not only helps schools ensure they are meeting their legal responsibilities under Keeping Children Safe in Education, but also supports continuous improvement in creating a safe, vigilant, and responsive learning environment for all pupils.
